Penelope Fletcher commits fully to making her aliens genuinely alien -- four arms, forked tongues, reptilian features -- and never softens them into humans in costume. The cultural clashes between Lumen and the Ra feel real, the gladiator arena opening is brutal and gripping, and the way the relationship expands from one mate to three feels organic rather than forced. Plus, having a Black heroine navigating an alien civilization adds real depth to the themes of otherness and belonging.
